About 50 eager kids and parents got a head start on celebrating the New Year. They went to the Discovery Museum in Santa Maria to celebrate the New Year early and instead ring in the “Noon Year” at 12:00 p.m.

The museum showed a scene from the movie Madagascar that led the crowd into a countdown to 2018.

Kids who attended made bean shakers and decorated donated wine corks with resolution ideas to be hung on a “2018” wall.

“These community events are wonderful because it does bring out all people from our area to enjoy and have fun together as a family,” Santa Maria resident Felicia Balezentes said.

Following the countdown, attendees celebrated with cookies and cider.
