Pigs are incredibly intelligent creatures, capable of displaying self-recognition, empathy, and the ability to communicate through vocalization. While it is not distinctly proven they recognize themselves in a mirror, one study showed that they were capable of finding food visible only by looking at a mirror! Furthermore, pigs are in tune with each others emotions and experience “emotion contagion”. For example, if one pig in a herd begins to feel stressed, any other pig that runs into that pig can become stressed as well! On top of this, pigs communicate using verbal cues. Momma pigs can even distinguish the sound of her own piglets in a group of others!
